Many years ago, fascination with cartoons and psychedelic posters from the 60’s surreal San Francisco area got me started drawing. From then on, I’ve basically been experimenting along, loving colours and the feeling of something grandiose.


Once, a gallery owner who had been selling my paintings refused a new batch, stating that ”this is not VanArt” (my pretentious nom de guerre at the time), and that he would like me to do something like the previous stuff. He went out of business before I could make up my mind whether to bow to corporate demands or stick it to the man. So I just went about my business.


But I get his point: If you keep a recognizeable style, people who like that style are likely to like your work in the future also.


Yet here we are – painting, hurling colours at canvasses, scratching, bleaching, blotting, splashing and dotting and so on and so forth. I do this for fun, and it’s fun to do, what I want, so paintings may very well vary. In fact, they are most likely to.
